Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist whose work, including the seminal Leaves of Grass, is some of the most important and influential of the American canon. Born in Long Island, Whitman founded his own newspaper The Long-Islander, and eventually became known as the 'poet of democracy'.
