Siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt a young boy to help them care for their family farm in the fictional town of Avonlea. The plucky orphan girl, Anne Shirley, is accidentally sent to them instead. The novel traces the misadventures and triumphs of this unconventional family, as the lives of Avonlea’s residents are transformed by Anne’s uninhibited imagination and big dreams.

Anne of Green Gables is Montgomery’s love letter to her childhood home, and the experiences of girlhood. The novel has been translated into at least thirty-six languages and inspired numerous adaptations, including the critically acclaimed series, Anne with an E.
