Synopsis
Lady Chatterley’s Lover tells the story of Constance Reid, an aristocratic woman who begins a passionate affair with Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper of the estate she shares with her husband. When it was first published, the novel was deeply controversial for its explicit depiction of sex and women’s desires.
It was banned in several countries and censored in others, and has since become synonymous with sexual liberation and anti-censorship discourse. Its poignant observations about class differences and the search for selfhood in an increasingly isolating world have secured its place among Lawrence’s greatest novels.
